Church History
We broke onto the scene! Literally!! In 1940 when two ladies, Rosa Dixon and Clara Paige, armed with a desire to teach children about Christ, broke into an old abandoned Church. However, the official history began in 1941, as OAKS CHAPEL, located on Oaks Road, James City North Carolina. Roy and Clara Paige purchased that same abandoned building as an outreach center. Clara and Rosa began conducting Sunday School for local children while Roy Paige preached to the parents who stayed.
Several years later, Oaks Chapel and New Bern Assembly merged to become one church. The combined NEW BERN ASSEMBLY was officially affiliated with the Assemblies of God in 1955. Then in 1988, New Bem Assembly sold its property and relocated to 2304 Hwy 70 New Bern, North Carolina, and its name was changed to CORNERSTONE ASSEMBLY OF GOD!
However, this was not the end of the story, in 1994, Cstone Church was incorporated under its current name "CORNERSTONE ASSEMBLY OF GOD, INC". At its new location, we added an additional building to be used as the main sanctuary, while the original building became the children's wing and fellowship hall. Then, in 2006, the third building was built and dedicated as the Worship/ Ministry Center. This provided three substantial and functional structures to serve our community.
We have continued to grow since then. In 2019 a local church in Morehead City, North Carolina was shutting its doors, but God had other plans for that areal As doors were closing for that local church, God was breaking open a door for Cstone Church to expand beyond the borders of Craven County and grow into the neighboring, Carteret County. Cstone Morehead was born on September 22, 2019. God provided a 7 1⁄2 acre plot of land along with a fully furnished sanctuary and a second building available to impact Carteret county. Simultaneously, a 5400-square-foot building expansion project was started and completed at the main campus in New Bern focused on serving the children of that community.
One of the phrases you will hear us say is: "One Church, multiple locations". In 2020, The whole country was polarized by the Covid 19 pandemic. Many non-profit and religious organizations were forced to close their doors. However, Cstone Church was driven to continue serving our communities. It was God's anointing combined with a willingness to become whatever was needed that enabled Cstone Church to have growth in both numbers and the development of an online congregation. Resulting in Cstone's ability to preach the gospel of Christ to people all over the world.
Today we are standing on the shoulders of an 8-decade-long history. The shoulders of those we are standing on is not something that we take for granted. We esteem the groundwork laid and the effects that ripple through our culture.
It is evident in our continued desire to serve the Lord and honored in the small things such as the use of the original pulpit.
That pulpit was repurposed by the founding members from a non-functioning organ left in the original building and is still used in the Cstone Church Vision Forward meetings (Annual Business Meetings).
Ultimately, we believe that the gospel is never changing, but the methods used to inspire and teach about Jesus Christ must remain relevant and effective and we continue to follow God's direction!
